"Principles, not Politics."

Welcome to our updated web page, which I admit sat idle for too long.  My first year in the Senate was much busier than expected, with the debate over the stimulus money and then the Governor's misdeeds taking up most of everyone's time and attention.  That said, you can expect regular updates from now on.

While the content is new, the message here is not.  What you will find here is an honest discussion of the issues that are facing South Carolina.  I don’t believe in "spin," empty rhetoric, dodging issues or telling people "what they want to hear."  In fact, if you see that here, I encourage you to let me know.

I believe in an open honest debate based on facts and principles.  That "Principles Not Politics" banner is there for more than just show.  You are entitled to know where your elected representatives stand and why.  And I am obligated to explain to you why I vote the way that I do.  And I welcome the opportunity to do just that.

Anyway, just about anything you might want to know about me and where I stand on things can be found on this website.  I especially encourage you to go to the "Issues" page, as that has a detailed list of topics that were either considered by the state legislature since I have been there, or are being discussed currently. What you will find there is what I hope to be a well-reasoned articulation of the issue, where I stand on it, and why.  You may not always agree, but you will always find from me a reasoned explanation telling you exactly why I voted the way I did.

I am a Republican, but more than that I am what I call a "traditional" conservative.  I believe that government serves a very important, but very limited purpose.  Sometimes that puts me at odds with Democrats, sometimes with Republicans.  That's fine with me.  My first priority is to the folks in Lancaster and York Counties, and to the principles we share: limited government; fiscal restraint and lower taxes; personal responsibility; strong educational opportunities; and a focus on private enterprise to provide jobs and create wealth.

Thanks again for being interested enough in the political process to stop by the website.  I hope you will find it worth your while.  If you need to get in touch with me, yes, that is my actual cellphone number that I publish here.  Call me or e-mail anytime.

You cannot help the poor
by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak
by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity
by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up
by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man
by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage
by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for
them, what they could and should do for themselves.

~ Abraham Lincoln
